A German blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a mandatory requirement for Indian students applying for a German student visa. It holds a fixed annual amount that is released to you monthly after you arrive.

The required amount changes periodically. As of 2025, it is EUR 11,208 per year, which releases as approximately EUR 934 per month. Check the current amount on the German consulate website before opening your account as the figure is updated regularly.

The three main providers used by Indian students are Fintiba, Expatrio, and Deutsche Bank. Fintiba and Expatrio are the most popular because the process is entirely online and faster.

For Fintiba: create an account on their website, submit a copy of your passport, enter your personal details, and choose your account type. You will be given a German IBAN. Transfer the required amount from your Indian bank account to this IBAN. Processing after the transfer clears typically takes 5 to 10 business days. Fintiba then issues a confirmation certificate (Sperrkonto Bescheinigung) that you attach to your visa application. Fintiba charges a setup fee of around EUR 89 and a monthly service fee.

For Expatrio: the process is nearly identical. Their fees are structured slightly differently, with a one-time fee model on some plans. Compare both platforms before choosing.

For Deutsche Bank: requires more paperwork and sometimes an in-person step. Processing is slower. Unless Fintiba and Expatrio are unavailable for some reason, most Indian students use the online platforms.

Timing is critical. Allow at least three to four weeks between starting the process and your visa appointment. Late certificates have caused students to miss appointment slots.
