Getting a German student visa as an Indian citizen involves several steps that need to happen in the right order. Missing one step or getting the sequence wrong can delay your application by months.

Step one is securing university admission. You need a formal admission letter or a conditional admission that requires you to meet the German language or TestDaF requirement. If your admission is conditional, resolve the condition before applying for the visa.

Step two is opening a blocked account. This must be done before your visa appointment (see the separate guide on blocked accounts). The confirmation certificate is a required document.

Step three is booking your VFS appointment. German student visa appointments in India are handled through VFS Global, which operates in multiple Indian cities. Appointment slots are limited, especially in peak months (March to June). Book your appointment as early as possible, ideally as soon as you have your university acceptance letter.

Documents typically required at the VFS appointment: valid passport with at least 6 months validity, completed visa application form, passport photographs, blocked account confirmation certificate, university admission letter, health insurance covering the initial months in Germany (international health insurance valid for Schengen), proof of health insurance continuity, academic certificates (degree, transcripts), language proficiency certificates if required by your course, and the APS certificate. The APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) certificate is a document-verification check specific to Indian applicants and requires a separate process with the APS India office. Many applicants are caught off guard by this requirement. Check whether your course requires it.

Processing after submission typically takes four to eight weeks. Apply early enough that you receive your visa before your semester begins.
