Your Student Pass is the document that allows you to remain in Singapore as a student. It is issued by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and is tied to your enrolment at your institution. Understanding its conditions is important because violations can result in cancellation and a bar on re-entry.

Your Student Pass is linked to your specific institution and programme. If you transfer universities, change your course significantly, or take a leave of absence, you need to notify ICA and your institution. Continuing to stay on a Student Pass after leaving or deferring your programme without proper authorisation is a violation.

Work restrictions: undergraduate students on a Student Pass can work up to 16 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during vacations. Graduate research students have different conditions, often more flexible. Check the conditions on your specific pass, not just general guidance, because they can differ.

Renewal: your Student Pass is typically issued for the duration of your programme. As you progress through each academic year, ICA and your institution communicate to renew your pass. You will receive a renewal in-principle approval letter, which you then use at ICA's offices or an authorised e-pass facility to collect your new pass.

If you leave Singapore for more than 30 consecutive days during term time, you may need to re-apply rather than simply re-enter. Short trips during vacations are fine. Check with your institution's international student office before any extended travel.

Reporting requirements: NUS, NTU, SMU, and other institutions have their own reporting systems for student attendance and status, which they feed into ICA. If you are consistently absent or withdraw, your pass can be cancelled without direct notification to you first.
