The Graduate Route is a UK visa that allows international students to stay and work in the UK for two years after completing their degree, or three years for PhD graduates. It is one of the most important things to plan for before you finish your studies.

To qualify, you must have successfully completed a degree at a UK institution that holds a valid track record status with UKVI. Most large universities and Russell Group institutions have this. Smaller or private providers sometimes do not. Before choosing a university, verify it is on the approved list.

During the Graduate Route, you can work in any job at any level without restriction on sector or skill level. You can switch jobs freely. Unlike the Skilled Worker visa, there is no salary threshold and no employer sponsorship required. This makes it genuinely flexible for early-career professionals still figuring out what they want to do in the UK.

What it does not allow: the Graduate Route cannot be extended. Two years is final. After it ends, you need to switch to another visa category or leave. It also does not count towards Indefinite Leave to Remain on its own. If your goal is to stay long-term, you need to switch to a route that does count before the two years are up.

To apply, you submit your application online after your university reports your course completion to UKVI. You cannot apply before this notification arrives. You apply from inside the UK before your current student visa expires. Processing takes around eight weeks, but you can continue living and working while your application is pending.

The application requires your passport, your BRP, your university completion letter, and a fee. Factor in the Immigration Health Surcharge as well.
